Feminist Friday:<br />Five Must Reads

Five important feminist reads from this week’s news:

1) Misogyny, up close and personal
“Decrying sexism from afar is one thing. More hurtful is the casual, everyday misogyny of the men we love and trust.” Okay, if you read nothing else, you MUST read this.

2) My Newborn Is Like a Narcotic
“Why won’t feminists admit the pleasure of infants?” Written by Katie Roiphe for Double X. If you haven’t already heard about the controversy, be sure to read the comments — the best part of the whole thing. If you’d like to go deeper, Shapely Prose has written a biting rebuttal. On The Atlantic’s Daily Dish, a former student of Katie Roiphe’s, Conor Friedersdorf, writes a supportive article This Round to Katie Roiphe. But it’s all nicely summed up by Freddie at the League of Ordinary Gentleman, a Roiphe critic.  ~ phew!

3) Has Dooce become the modern day June Cleaver?
This post was written back in April 2009 but it’s so good that if you haven’t read it, you MUST. Here’s a follow-up article that’s equally good: Does mainstream media have mommy issues? Thanks to PunditMom for tweeting about this! @PunditMom

4) Don’t be outraged for Muslim women
“Western feminists should not assume everyone’s struggle mirrors their own – their obsession with the burqa has a patronising whiff.” Another article from the Guardian.

5) Women’s Rights and Human Rights
Written on Women’s Equality Day by Judi Jennings for the Huffington Post

Thanks so much for linking to my Dooce and Mommy issues posts. I’m glad you liked them, and really appreciate you introducing them to your readers. I hope they won’t be disappointed if they go to the blog and find tonight’s post, the far more trivial subject of kids’ tv characters that parents despise, to be posted shortly.

Susan, you are very welcome! I’m happy to pass on your work to others.
